I just uploaded another old picture I had. Hopefully the respective parties won't be upset. I think its 1974 in Scarborough and the handsome couple is Denise Crabtree and Steven Holland.

OK this is what I have for the 67 74 picture. Location; it was taken in the "girls" yard from the roof of the canteen. I don't know if it was taken by Peter Brook, but I think he took the others of this style for Hill and Dale.

3 I think this is Fiona Sanderson

17 ? Tony Jagger

Hello all of you! I was at SBGS 67 to 75. Oops, yes, there was an extra year retaking A levels. I have the photo taken in 72 as well as the 69 and 73 copies of Hill and Dale. I was even mad enough to write names down so I will try to fill in some gaps. Do you have any hints on uploading the panoramic photo? Anyway, love to all. Mandie

I was at SBGS for a short time, parents relocated to Bradford! However I was there in 1960 (Golden Jubilee Year) and still have the panoramic photo for that year and the Jubilee brochure. Reading your website reminded me of "ronny" Ramsden and the lovely "bertie" Ballard, plus maybe some masters that I would prefer to forget! - yes, I know, unfair, they were trying there best but my testoterone unbued me with a good degree of stupidity at the time!!
Particular memories of old friends, Ian Butler and Ian Sutcliffe - I wonder what happened to them?
I'm so pleased to have come across your site, it brought back happy memories. By the way, I noticed the bungalows were mentioned on one of your threads, the third one was named "Imboe" - strange what things the memory stores away.
One question, as 2010 will be the 100th anniversary of the school, does anyone know if there are any special plans for a reunion?
kind regards (and well done!!)
David

Hi David. Thanks for the contribution. I have a vague memory that the names of the three main prefabs were over their doors and were Ronjes - rooms 41/42, Imbeau - rooms 43/44, and Faraways - rooms 45/46. The Ronjes/Imbeau names had something to do with 'Ron' 'Beau'mont who was head when they were erected. I'm sure someone out there will be able to correct the detail though. Regards

Hi David
Sorry to hear about the Puzzle closing, especially remembering the many times we spent there in Harold and Nellie's day.
Although cheap supermarket booze may have a part to play it may also have had something to do with the far-less atmospheric and much larger real-ale pub you now have to pass opposite the library and swimming baths in order to get to the Puzzle Hall.
Is it called The Works? (is it even still there?)
Rob

Yes, sadly Rob I think that place is still there. It's just that us old gits still prefer somewhere quietish to talk, play doms and darts, and drink decent beer. Not the loud, plastic wood alcopop palaces that the PubCos create. The Puzzle had a great little live music scene going but Punch Taverns and their like have no interest in heritage, longevity or even providing any entertainment, they're just in it for a fast buck now. Gone are the days when breweries were proud to put their names outside their pubs, now the brewing conglomerates and the PubCos just hide behind made up names (or even worse, use the names of long defunct breweries they actually destroyed). Maybe a new role in life is beckoning you. It'd make a great base for your music and photography interests.

Happy New Year to all ex- SBGS. Maybe one day the great roll of honour will be complete. I offer the following names, though not with total confidence:
370 - Felicity Lomgbottom
260 - Janet Akroyd
275 - Susan Wiggins
276 - Helen Williams
282 - Ruth Bungay
281 - Christine Oates
277 - Sheridan Collier
With even less certainty the following may be:
316 - Andrew? Ball
317 - Tony Morton
272 - Susan Holroyd
I'm not sure 295 is Roger Priestly. He was in my year,(Lower 6th) but I can't find him. The name Andrew Parker (Upper 6th)sort of rings a very distant bell, but I may well be wrong.
For those interested in staff - I believe Peter Brook is still going strong and recently celebrated his 80th birthday. I also understand he has a new art exhibition in Brighouse starting in the near future.

Hi this is Peter Colton. (SBGS 1958 to 1966) I have school panoramic photos for 1960, and 1963, but have no idea how to put them on the web site. Are you interested? If so how do I go about it.
They are both in good condition, framed and hanging in my hallway. Do you think I should have done more with my life???
I live near Leicester/Melton Mowbray if that helps.
I believe that 399 is David Jackson

Attended Barkisland Junior 59 to 61 Ryburn School from 61 to 75 and would love to hear about fellow pupils - we lived in Barkisland and travelled to school with Grammar school pupils in a rickety old Glenway bus - it usually was a drive through hell and you were lucky to survive the trips...loads of bullying and some kids must have been scarred for live from the experience. Hubert Whiteley owned the company and occasionally drove the old crates. Love to hear of any other old pupils from the era......

Hi Jean.
Michelle Spencer ring any bells? The 1st XI Hockey team 64/65, when your Marilyn was captain was selected from: Sheena Murray, Joyce Horne, Gisella Parker, Jean Holroyde, Shirley Wood, Susan Baines, Marilyn MacKay, Sheila MacKay, Jennifer Goggs, Hilary Curtis and Denise Buckwell (good to see to a very strong Ripponden contingent in there). So, can anyone match the other names to faces?

Long school photo - the names were correct. Both Christine Dolby and Gillian Agus were from Elland, as was Pauline Ginsburg. How ones memory is triggered looking at such photos. I still have my copy. Amazing to see the speech day programme. I remember travelling to it and meeting friends on arrival. I also remember presenting flowers to the speakers wife, at prize giving when I was a first year. Hi David.
One name I can place on the 67 photo is 179 Marion Crossley. Can not think why!
I have an earlier photo than this one but I do not know how to get it on here with out sending it to you by post or if you are local bringing it to you.

Hi
Came across this site when I googled my brothers name ( Steve Rotherforth ). Although I am younger ( left in 76 ) I saw the name Geoff Whiteley mentioned in comments and thought you might all like to know I see him sometimes in the Albert pub in HB !! Of course I give him a wide berth, but he is still there !

OK Dave.. I have a few names. I can remember some of the faces, but matching the names is a tough one. They all look so young. But here are 3 that I'm sure off. Section 7, to the right of Ray Norcliffe is MARK TRAVIS, his brother I think, was in your year. Section 10, bottom row, 3rd from the end is PAUL BOOCOCK. Srction 9 , 3rd from the left of Gledhill is ROB WILD.

I was a mere 1st year in 1973 - and would love to see more of us 'later' students on this website - i remember some names, but others must have been before my time. My sister, Sally, tells me that the old school building has now been demolished - what a shame ! I'd have liked a last look - round before the final curtain.

Dave,
I added the latest picture. As you so rightly said, its Dusty Binns and Geoff Whiteley, giving a parting speech to the graduating 6th form Seniors in the summer of 1974. This took place in the 6th form common room, which was next to the woodworking room. Both Dusty and Geoff were the 6th form admins at the time.

I've just read Sue's message - did I really spill a jelly into your blazer pocket! Sorry if I did - I have no recollection of it! I hope it was an accident. I dreaded the thought of being put in detention so didn't do too many naughty things at school. I'll pass on your best to my brother, Grant.

Found your site quite by chance but found it very nostalgic. I was at SBGS 1958--1965. Have very fond memories of the place but I'm sure I'm looking back through rose tinted glasses. Must have liked school though as i became a teacher but now retired and find all things educational mind numbingly boring.
I remember Geoff Whitely and his English lessons well but hated the maths and the appalling teaching of it - if you didn't understand first time you were deemed to be thick. I often had the chalk thrown at me!
Enjoyed reading the other comments.

Hi everyone - I'm from the 1970's - I was a humble first year in 1973 - what a fantastic school - I loved every minute apart from the one where Mme. Littlefair accused me of writing my signature on a desk - it wasn't me! Are you out there? She obviously wasn't M. Clouseau! I have lovely memories of the school so if you could extend this site to include 1970's students and even 80's it would be great!

Only just discovered this site. Thought you might be interested to know that the 'class of '71' had a very successful reunion in 2003 (when all of us reached 50!)- we managed to find virtually everybody from our year which was a shock, and two thirds of them managed to turn up - seem to remember still being in the bar of the Tower House Hotel in Sowerby Bridge until 4.30 in the morning.
So there are still some of us out there!

I hope you don't mind the intrusion to your wonderful website. I came across while having a nostalgic moment at work. I attended SBGS from 1967 to 1974, so I don't recognize most of you. Although I did date Rob Walsh's sister Ann and I confess to listening to most of Rob record collection . Cream, Captain Beefheart Crosby Still Nash and Young etc. You had excellent taste in music Rob. Now I think I remeber that David Patterson had a younger brother Ian, who I used to hang with. On the 1968 graduation pamphlet I would have been in 1W .. yes Mr Whiteley. I have some sordid stories about him too. Well a great site. I have some old photos that I may post from around the 1971 era.

Quite a shock to stumble across your site by complete accident. Even bigger shock to find my name in the 1969 speech day programme.
Rest assured that SBGS is represented here in South Yorkshire by my good self and dear lady wife, Marion Crossley as was. If I ever put any of you in detention than I am truly sorry, but you probably deserved it.
I never dreamed that singing 40 years on, would actually happen, but... well almost.

The reunion was excellent, having lived 'down south' for so long I am always keen to meet up with fellow northerners. Everytime we visited my parents we would scour the old haunts looking for people who might remember me, I usually came home disappointed. The prospect of seeing so many familiar faces was quite exciting although I was rather nervous.
Marion Darby and I arrived at SBGS late, we were in the 'slow learners group' from Ryburn and we were in for a bit of a culture shock. At Ryburn we were considered intellectual [top of the heap so to speak] not so at the Grammer School - some of the staff were less than welcoming, Geoff Whitley being the worst offender, but I have to hand it to him I was determined to prove him wrong, so perhaps I should be thanking him.
Our Year group were brilliant, [you lot] We were accepted, welcomed and in no way made to feel inadequate. I still have fond memories of Friday nights at The Bay Horse.
I hadn't intended to study Art untill I met Peter Brook, he persuaded me. He was one of the kindest, most sensitive teachers I have ever encountered and I have been teaching myself for 28 years. I hope I am in some ways like him in my dealings with children and I have him to thank for any success I may have.
I hope to make it to the next 'bash' and I will try to contact Susan Greenwood [Norfolk]

Yes David, an excellent effort.
However I do have some differing opinions on the Grammar School to those you start the home page of www.sbgs.co.uk with.
This is not to belittle your efforts, but perhaps to seek others’ opinions – or to let off steam!?
I hope you’ll allow me some space, in the interests of sharing varying ideas.
I found the Grammar School stultifying and depressing, as did my three siblings who actually made a success of their education in contrast with my dropping out. And I don't recall any of our group of friends having a good word to say about the place at the time.
Charlie Hallows seemed an unpleasant and uncomfortable character and most of the teachers were doing it by rote, with only a very few seeming interested.
But then, I criticise what I can't do - I could never have the patience to be a teacher.
However I still think they were poor.
I suppose it's every school's position to be behind the times, and we had the advantage/problem of going through adolescence in the 1960s, when most contemporary music, film, and literature (the things that interested me) showed the world was changing fast and reflected a very different and much less hypocritical culture to the one we were getting at school, which seemed to be largely based in the 1950s.
Also, to interject a personal note, they wouldn't let me combine arts and sciences in my A level choices, and I was unable to do the subjects that interested me. This was largely to blame for me leaving after the first year of sixth form, and thus not getting any A levels. In other words I believe they messed up my education badly.
Thanks for hearing me out – hope to hear from some of you?
Rob
