Just thought I would share a memory about Peter Brook! He made me write an incredibly long set of lines about behaving in class using a fountain pen on paper towels.

I have just uploaded two photographs taken of the backstage helpers at the 1960 school play. The one with four people is the lighting team: L to R Glynn Payne, Melvyn Jagger, Leslie Sunderland, Gerald Brooke.
The other shows scenery builders and shifters, electricians, props, prompter, etc. L to R Mr Stanley Shaw, Ronald Taylor, David(J)Greenwood, Bernard Whittaker, Barrie Yeomans, Leslie Sunderland, ? Hamer, ? , Barbara Bogg, Susan Law.
I have also uploaded a photo from year 58/59 of Form 4A in the physics lab taken by Jack Kippax. I will supply all the names when they have been numbered. It features most of the people on the 1956 1A Form photo.
Also I have uploaded scans from the 1960 Jubilee Brochure.

My last name is Agnes but your site apparently doesn't like French accents. Mme Littlefair inspired me and I studied French (and Russina) at Bath Uni, and have been living working and raising a family in France since I left Uni in 1977.
Fond memories of Peter Brook : I took and failed O level art in the 6 th form. Even though I failed I have only good memories of art classes with Peter Brook.
PS thanks to Brian Pitts for the link to this site.

You're right, I was wrong by one in the 1960 panoramic. In the 1963 panoramic, I am # 58. Thanks for all this work. The old Honors Board was saved from the demolition, and is stored at my mother's house in S.B. It ends in 1969 with the last ten or so people who went to university that year. I suppose they didn't want to continue with it. Its oak, with gold leaf names, and is big, about 5 ft square. Anyone have a use for it?
Reply from: David Paterson

Thanks Trevor. Do you have a good photo of the board? If you could upload one I'll put a message on the home page to see if there are any takers. Seems crazy to have it go to waste. I seem to remember there were a number of boards, most in dark oak whereas the most recent was in light oak. Any idea what happened to the others?

I have uploaded a picture taken of the passing of the baton during a School Sports Day 4x110yd relay in 1957-1959, but I suspect it was 1959.

The runners are (LtoR) Keith Wilcox(?) passing to Alan Fairbank, and Rodney Clarke passing to Rodney Wilcox(?).

It is almost certainly the last leg of the relay because Alan Fairbank was an English Schoolboys 880yd champion, and so probably ran away with the finish !!

I think that George Hallows and Ron Beaumont appear over Alan Fairbank's left shoulder, and Peter Brook and Geoff Whitely are bracketing me.

I have uploaded the SBGS Class 4A photo taken in the Spring of 1956. Sorry for the mediocre quality, someone must have an original.

I am not wearing full uniform (other than the tie) as I had just transferred from a GS in Sheffield, where uniform was only compulsory up to the third year. Ron Beaumont gave me reminders all the time, until I got the full kit. My mother was just widowed and we were very poor so he eventually let up on me.

I was a trade (so to speak) for Tony Kistell, who came to my class (3A) and school in Sheffield a year earlier.

I believe that Tony's father and Frank Heaton's father swapped jobs in the West Riding Constabulary. Frank came originally to 3B but later moved up to 5A. We were very close friends until he died, tragically young,of complications of MS.

To the best of my recollection, and spelling, the people in the photo are:

Back row (LtoR)
Michael Hill
Peter Sutcliffe
John Allen

David Lupton
David Ackroyd
Rodney Clarke

The chemistry and biology departments also contributed. The people shown are L to R: Peter Rush, Christopher Walton, Mr Jack Kippax, Joan Walker, Leslie Sunderland.

In the late 50's there was a tradition that the senior sixth form played a game of field hockey against the staff, late in the year. I think that it was in late June, one of the several free days after 'A' levels and before the school year ended.

Held on the lower field, with most of the school in attendance, it was a match in which there was always talk of settling scores with the least loved members of staff.....but though boisterous, was always pretty friendly and enjoyable!

I have uploaded a picture of the student team. Small and in pretty poor shape after 51 years it has taken a fair bit of work to make it viewable.

Here are many of 6S of 1959, plus a few of the 1958 6s who stayed on an extra year for Schlarship Level etc.

Back row from L to R:

Frank Heaton, Allen Hampshire, Alan Fairbank, William (Billy) Crothers, Rod(ney) Clarke, John Spink, David (Bill) Sim.

Front Row from L to R:

Keith Wilcox, Stella Ward, Pauline Davis, Kathleen Hey, Michael Hellawell.

Other members of 6S in that year were John Ashworth, Sandra Thomas, Elizabeth Lees, Michael Hill and Peter Sutcliffe.....hope I haven't missed anyone out.

Attended the Centenary event at the new school the other night, it was a pretty low-key affair but there were lots of people there, from all generations. Former teachers present were: Mr Walker (Chemistry - 50s/60s)now in his 80s but certainly not looking it; Beryl Collins (PE/Biology - 60s/70s)looking much the same as ever; and Stuart Farrar (Geology/Geography - 60s/70s et al) also looking pretty well. Apart from the person that I had gone with, there didn't appear to be anyone else there from my year, at least none that I was able to recognise! Nonetheless it was enjoyable to catch up with one or two people from the past and have a natter. There were lots of old photos on display, including probably all of the panoramics, even from the time that it was a secondary school. The Art teacher who had organised the display did say that all of the pics are digitalised so if anyone would like a copy of any photo, if they contact her at the school, she will happily supply them.
I may not have recognised many people but who could fail to recognise Frank Worthington in all his colourful glory?

I enjoyed the recent banter between Keith & David - we need more of that!
My memories of SBGS were that it was a very good school, with discipline, I can only ever remember one boy getting into trouble with the police, whilst I was there and it was only a minor matter. I was never bullied! It gave us a good grounding and it's sad that the children of today don't have what we had - I count myself as being very lucky going there even though I was not an academic!

But now I'm intrigued.

Reply from: David Paterson
Date: 12 Jun 2010 20:43
No offence taken at all Keith, I'm far thicker skinned than that. I won't bore you, or anyone else, with the finer details of my removal from the school. Suffice to say I just didn't fit the mould, and I'm glad to say probably still don't. The major problem was that I was a little too forthcoming with my opinions and as you can see that hasn't changed a great deal. The experience only strengthened my resolve and did nothing to change my attititude towards, what was and probably still is, an excellent school with superb teachers. It was simply a conflict of personalities as one of the finest teachers was also one of the most instrumental in my removal.

I thought your reply to Carol Cowling's message on 08 June was chucking furlish - and that's putting it politely.

I wondered if your tone had anything to do with the fact that Carol's is a 29-year attachment to SBHS.

I have to say I found your message a bit strange as I made no personal reference to Carol - who I don't know and have never had any connection with
whatsoever. Although all power to her efforts in bringing any school history to life as I could find no mention of it at all on the current school web site.

My point was simply that the choice of a Wednesday night to hold this event has made it almost impossible for anyone living outside the area and
with a full-time job to attend. All attempts I made to drum up support amongst those friends I'm personally in touch with met with the same response. 'I'd have loved to come. On a Wednesday night? No chance!'. Ironically, a number of them are actually teachers themselves.

As for me being a 'grammar school snob'? I'm sure that will cause at least a few ripples of laughter amongst the people who knew me at school as I was actually expelled from the grammar school for rebelling against precisely that culture.

Kind regards
David

Hi David,

I have my mother's school panoramic photo dated June 1931. It's very interesting because on there is Freda Longbottom as a girl when she was a pupil at the school. Of course, Freda went on to become Headmistress and is present on the 1967 panoramic photo.

My daughter (who is a photographer and is good with digitizing photos) has scanned the photograph and it is ready to upload however we are having problems doing so as the site keeps crashing. Do you have an address where we could send you a CD of the photo?

All the best, Sheila.

I have been an Art teacher at SGHS for 29 yrs (Miss Carter) and am currently digitizing all the old achieve photographs for the Centenary Evening which also includes a Video taken to commemorate the 75th and a Cine film taken in 1960 to celebrate the Grammar Schools 50th anniversary. Once all these images are digitised acquiring copies will be very easy for all former students interested as well as this site in particular, dedicated to the Grammar School years. I am also hoping that they can all be accessed through a link in our current schools web site in the future. Along with the photographs, the school has kept a lot of other interesting archive materials which we hope to have on display during the evening.
I hope this information might encourage former students to attend the evening if only to see if they were in the cross country run, canteen or form VI in the science room in the 1960 Film, or in my art room, or the technology room in the 75th Video.

I like many other ex-SBGS pupils would have been delighted to attend the Centenary celebrations but the choice of a mid-week evening to hold this event has made it almost impossible for anyone outside of the immediate Sowerby Bridge area to be there - being the middle of a working week. Perhaps not exactly the best choice of date given that the school has had over 99 years to prepare for the event! Disappointed is putting it politely.

For Eileen Mary Hayes!!

Dear Eileen,
I opened the SBGS website and I was delighted to see your messages and the photographs. Fragments of memories came flooding back. A lot has happened to us both in the past 50+ years. My marital life and career have been somewhat chequered. But I have been married to my present wife for over 25 years and I did 'retire' recently as a prof from the Medical Education Unit of the University of Nottingham.

And you? Did you marry a physicist. Do you have children?
It would be good talk if only electronically.
,
Best wishes,

George

Re John Schofield's contact of the 4th March. Yes, 347 is Ian Butler. I lived on the same street as Ian for around 5 years, that being Clifton Street, Sowerby Bridge. Ian and I were in the same class, 2B, across in the "bungalows" in 1958/59. At the end of the academic year, as I remeber, Ian moved into the A stream, whilst I moved in the opposite direction! I managed to trcae Ian last year, he now lives in Bolden, Tyne & Wear.

I do vist the site from time to time, it's always good to wonder down Memory Lane. Sorry to hear about Peter Brooks, I always remember his terific enthusiasm, even though my artistic skills bordered on the non existant!

Sorry to see there is no panorama from 1960, though I still have mine framed on the wall in the study. 1960 was of course the Golden Jubilee year, it's dissapointing that there seems to be no plans to celebrate the centenary of the school. Or maybe there are, and I just don't know about them. If anyone has any news about plans, well, I for one would be happy to make the trip from Hampshire.

Just had another scan along the 1967 Panoramic - I believe that 66 is Andrew Wilkinson. 316 is called Rouse but I can't remember his first name, even though we did History together with Mrs. Chapman. I think 319 is a Wilson, but again I'm not sure of a first name - could be Paul or Peter. All three came to SBGS quite late, probably after "o" levels at other schools.
On the 1961 Essoldo girls picture I'm pretty sure 20 is Jean McGregor.

Just found this site, congratulations on your hard work. It was nice seeing a picture of my first ever proper girlfriend Judith again.
Names for the 1963 picture;
62 Geoffrey Anns, not sure about the spelling
63 Angela Douch
67 Alan Bull
68 David Marsh
193 Stuart Broadhead
211 Nancy Sayes, not Nansi
277 Graham Lord
296 Christopher Hoyle, I do not think it is Stuart Dalgleish

Cheers Stephen. I've updated the photo. You have number 63 as Angela Douch but whoever it is is definitely male. Also Nansi P Sayes name is spelt 'si' a number of times in Hill and Dale.

Hi Bernard
Thanks for this. I've added it to the 1940s section but the full size version is quite blurred so it's difficult to make out the faces. Do you have a copy scanned at a higher resolution please?

Sorry, but on my entry of 26/12/09 naming the 2nd and 3rd year 6th form on the 1956 photo I uploaded, I have inadvertently transposed the names of Peter Hanson and Peter Fenton.

Anyone else thought that the current weather is a fitting tribute to Peter Brook. It's like all of his finest paintings in a massive gallery.I took my dog for a walk through Callis Wood near home a couple of days ago and was moved to tears by the beauty of it all, then came home to see it all again in the prints of Peter's work. Priceless
